Featuring: Pornography Prayer Points with Scriptures
Using scriptures to fight pornography is perhaps the most critical step for Christians. Because we know that God’s word is powerful enough to cut through our hard hearts. And it renews us through Christ Jesus.
This is a most serious pursuit as Peter tells us, “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” 1 Peter 2:11 These passions of the flesh wage war against our souls. We should not take it lightly, but seek God at this very moment.
What Does The Bible Say About Pornography?
Matthew 5:28
But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Jesus in His most famous sermon on the mount tells us that looking at a woman with lustful intentions is committing adultery with her. This is most serious, as just the intention of desiring that woman or man in your heart, is like committing adultery with them.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
God through Paul’s epistle tells every believer to Flee from sexual immorality. Fleeing is the act of running away. Don’t be caught or ensnared by the evil desire of pornography, fornication, or lust. Therefore, run away! Because this horrible act is against yourself, defiling the very temple which was designed to honor and worship God. Turn, and glorify God with your body.
1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
God tells us that those who trust in Christ that God will help you in your temptation. For each temptation, He provides a way of escape. And because God provides the escape, He get’s the glory. It is not in your own efforts that you have endured, but God will help you.
Psalm 119:37
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.
This is a model prayer for those wanting to use the scriptures to fight pornography. It can be as simple as: God, help turn my eyes from worthless things. You know I have looked at many sinful things. Help me turn away, and give me life in your ways. I want to live for you.
1 John 2:16
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
The world is corrupted because of sin entering the world. Fighting sin, using scriptures to fight pornography will never be what the world suggests. It want’s you to desire these horrible things. But it only leads to death.
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Another model prayer for those wanting to use the scriptures to fight pornography. We want whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, anything excellent, anything worthy of praise, that it would permeate to the forefront of our thoughts. This is possible through repentance, prayer, and memorization. Seeking God for all of life.
James 1:14-15
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
We need to realize we are tempted by our own desires. We need to fight with God’s help to kill our own fleshly desires, and put on the mind of Christ (Romans 12:1-2).
How Can The Bible Help You Fight Pornography?
If you’re going to use The Bible to fight pornography, you need to do it on the scripture’s terms. Here are some helpful tips for the next steps to fighting this awful sin.
Repentance and Confession
We must look to God’s word for instructions on killing sin. Repentance is commanded and continual in the Christian life.
Acts 3:19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Repent! Repentance is turning from our old way of life, the way which is walking contrary to God’s good guidance for us. Clearly stated above pornography, fornication, and lust are all against God’s design for us and hurt us. Therefore, we must repent and turn back to God through Jesus christ, that our sins may be forgiven. After this, we will be given new life, and we will become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
A helpful exercise for me was to memorize and take to heart Galatians 2:20, that I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me, and this life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me (From my memory of over 6 years ago of having it memorized).
You need to whole heartedly know that God’s Son gave himself to save you from ALL your sins, not just pornography, but all the sins you’ve ever committed and will commit, and now you can live for Him in His freedom.
Find A Local Church and Accountability
If you want to use scriptures to fight pornography, you must follow God’s guidance to gather with a local church and be accountable to others. Sin, like bacteria, breeds in the dark. When exposed to the light of community and accountability, for someone who has never experienced this it can be like a new life is granted to them. Which, precisely, is why God designed us to be in community.
First, find a good church. If you don’t attend a church that preaches the gospel, you can find one here at a search portal through 9Marks.
Secondly, when you attend, speak to a pastor or elder about your new faith or your struggles in your faith, and that you are seeking godly accountability. For James 5:16 tells us, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working” Again, God has designed us to be with others in accountability. When we do this, we find life and peace through Christ.
It may be also helpful for a friend to lock-down a computer or phone with parental controls. If you want to be fighting sin, make it hard and uncomfortable for you to get to sin. Make it easy for you to pursue righteousness. Consider even this helpful software Covenant Eyes.
Find A Biblical Counselor
For some, the next best step may be to find a Biblical counselor. To address our sinful problems and habits, we need God’s good word for us.
